What is a recurring checklist?

A recurring checklist is a fixed list of steps you complete on a schedule, every day, week or month. It resets to unchecked at the start of each new period, so the same routine is done the same way every time.

Recurring checklists vs one-off to-do lists

A to-do list might say “buy a desk”. Once you buy it, that task is done. A recurring checklist might say “clear the desk” as part of a weekly reset. You need that step again next week.

Use a one-off list for things to finish once. Use a recurring checklist for a process you want to repeat.

Why they work

A written sequence means fewer forgotten steps and less thinking about what comes next. You can focus on doing the routine instead of reconstructing it.

Marking a period complete also gives you a record of consistency. In Litanic, a streak shows how many consecutive periods you finished.

How to write a good one

  1. Start with the outcome. What should be true when you finish? “The shop is ready to open” gives the list a clear purpose.
  2. Start with 3 to 9 items. Keep the list small enough to use. Add a step when experience shows you need it.
  3. Put verbs first. Write “File receipts” rather than “Receipts”. Make each item a clear action.
  4. Use the order you actually do them. Walk through the routine once, then reorder the list to fit.

Daily, weekly and monthly examples

Daily: a morning routine

  • Drink water.
  • Stretch.
  • Plan the day.

Weekly: a house reset

  • Clear the surfaces.
  • Plan meals.
  • Write the shopping list.

Monthly: a small business close

  • Review spending.
  • File receipts.
  • Reconcile the accounts.

Choose the schedule that fits the work. In Litanic, daily lists reset at the start of the next day, weekly lists on Monday and monthly lists on the first of the month.

Use streaks kindly

A streak counts consecutive periods in which you finished every item. It can help you notice consistency, but it is not a score of your worth.

If you miss a period, begin again. If you keep missing the same step, make it smaller or ask whether it belongs on the list.

What is a recurring checklist?

A recurring checklist is a fixed list of tasks completed on a repeating schedule that resets to unchecked at the start of each period.

How is it different from a to-do list?

A one-off to-do list changes as tasks are finished. A recurring checklist keeps the same steps for the next scheduled routine.

How many items should I start with?

Start with 3 to 9 items. Keep each step clear and small enough to check off.

What happens if I miss a period?

In Litanic, a missed period breaks the streak. Your routine stays available so you can begin again.

Can I make one without an account?

Yes. Open Litanic, name a routine and choose daily, weekly or monthly. Your lists stay in this browser.
